A simple tip to improve the accuracy of crossed K-wire placement in the management of displaced paediatric supracondylar fractures of the humerus

چکیده
BACKGROUND In 1991 Lindaman et al described a fluoroscopic technique to determine the incision site for percutaneous fixation of a slipped capital femoral epiphysis.1 Using similar principles, we describe a simple technique to improve the accuracy of crossed K-wire placement in displaced paediatric supracondylar fractures of the humerus. Although not original, our technique is very useful and we believe it should be used more widely when dealing with paediatric elbow fractures as accurate wire placement can be difficult in the presence of swelling and the relative small size of the fracture components in children.

The supracondylar fracture of the humerus in children remains the most challenging injury for the orthopedic surgeon. It is important to consider the options of treatment very carefully and tailor the treatment according to the characteristics of each fracture. In this study we observed outcomes of surgical procedures using the Kirschner-wire for the dislocated (displaced) supracondylar fractur...
متن کاملRisk factors of loss reduction after percutaneous fixation in supracondylar humerus in pediatric: a descriptive-analytical study
Background & Aims: supracondylar humerus fracture is one of the most common pediatric elbow fractures accounting for about 16% of the pediatric fractures. Loss of reduction is one of the complications after closed and percutaneous fixation. This research is aimed to investigate the factors involved in the loss of reduction. Method: In this descriptive study, the children with supracondylar hum...

PURPOSE To assess the efficacy of our protocol for treatment of displaced Gartland type-3 supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children. METHODS Records of 43 children with displaced Gartland type-3 supracondylar fractures of the humerus admitted from October 1997 to October 2003 were reviewed. Patients were treated within 12 hours of admission by closed reduction (n=33) or open reductio...

PURPOSE Study of a biplanar crossed pin construct by two crossed Kirschner wires in the management of displaced extension type supracondylar humeral fractures in children. METHODS Sixty-four patients with such fractures were included and treated according to the study protocol: after achieving closed reduction under general anesthesia with fluoroscopic control, two crossed Kirschner wires of ...

Background and Objectives: Supracondylar fractures of the humerus are the most common fracture pattern of the elbow in children. Severely displaced supracondylar fractures of the distal humerus in children are a challenging problems. Many treatment methods have been described for the treatment of displaced supracondylar fractures of the humerus, however, it has not been reached a consensus for ...
